Hideo couldn't recall the last time he'd had to be hospitalized, if he'd ever been.

So he had no idea it would be so damn boring.

His doctors wouldn't let him do much of anything; the brain damage meant he had to limit any intellectually stimulating activities, even listening to TV or reading. And he couldn't get any Psychic contact from his Pokemon either, so the information he was getting was at a minimum.

He couldn't even walk around the hospital wing without several Pokemon trailing behind him. His Pokemon, yes, but he couldn't even get privacy in here.

(Granted, they weren't just monitoring his health - they wanted to protect him in case any Rockets tried to finish the job).

At the moment, he was in his bed, finishing up lunch - after having to tell his Pokemon he could eat fine on his own. His Indeedee, Blissey, and Hatterene would just have to be content watching him to make sure he didn't choke while he ate.

[break][break] Two wraps on the door and ollie morales announces his entrance. The broad-shouldered man entered the room alongside his Meltan, who immediately hops on the bed to inspect what the young boy is eating.

[break][break] Ollie pauses for a moment - awkward, until he remembers exactly Hideo Kino's predicament.

[break][break] "It's ollie morales," he says, rubbing his neck. "I wanted to come see you - Mels told me you were here. And I've been making my rounds."

When Hideo heard the knocking on the door, he'd expected it to be a nurse that was there to check his vitals or a doctor that wanted to talk to him about some test they had to do.

But the voice was a familiar one - and if Hideo had the means, he would've immediately recognized the emerald-eyed Ranger that walked in.
It took hearing his name for Hideo to realize who it was.

He could certainly recognize the feeling of a Meltan walking on his bed, one who'd get a full view of the beef sandwich and orange juice he had on his plate.

His attending Pokemon had a close eye on said Meltan; they weren't going to let it steal any bites.

"Oh, hey Ollie."

It took him a few seconds to think of what to say.

"I'm, uh, doing ok?" The cast on his left arm was a light one, but it was gonna be there for a while. And the sutures on his skull might be hard to see under his hair, but they were there.

"Gotta stay here for a week. I can't even watch tv or read 'til the docs here say it's safe for me."

Which was to say, he was so damn bored.

"How about you? You get to be in Petalburg or Sootopolis?"

Wherever Ollie was, clearly he had a better time than Hideo did.

[break][break] ollie shook his head, quickly plucking the meltan off of hideo's bed and putting him to the floor, flicking a small poffin to distract the pokemon with.

[break][break] "sorry, heh," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. Hideo Kino would feel the bed creak as ollie sat onto the corner of it. "he's a handful sometimes."

[break][break] "i'm glad to hear it," he said, referring to the fact that the other said he felt ok. "but that is lame. you can't listen to anything?"

[break][break] "no audio books? memes?"

[break][break] his brow furrowed.

[break][break] "what about podcasts? voice messages?"

[break][break] could hideo even work a phone?

[break][break] "oh! i was in sootopolis, with melly and PENELOPE LIVY, annalise henderson, lam logan, and a few others."

[break][break] ollie had fared well, thanks to Yuina Higashi, but it wasn't like the same could be said for others.

[break][break] "it was - uh - it was pretty rough. but we don't need to talk about that — what happened to you? you look pretty beaten up from petalburg."

Hideo couldn't resist letting out a small snort; did Meltans even eat normal food? His Meltan only ever ate metal.

And poffins.

But all Pokemon ate poffins.

"I know they are," Hideo said, a smile on his face, "I had one. Now it's a Melmetal."

As Ollie listed off all the things Hideo couldn't do, the boy nodded, the smile on his face intentionally strained. "Nope! None of that. Can't do anything too mentally stimulating or it could stress my brain out and damage it."

Which didn't leave him much to do. "Most I can do is talk. And I guess do stuff with Pokemon that try to eat my lunch."

But enough about his lack of entertainment - onto the war.

"I heard Rocket still has Sootopolis," Hideo noted, "but it got pretty messed up." He barely had any details, stuck with what he could hear the nurses and other patients' families talk about in the hallways.

"Petalburg…well, I'm not the best for giving a detailed account, but it went pretty bad there. I got in a fight with some Rockets…and at some point, a Psychic Pokemon did something to me, and I was outta it for a while."

He lifted up his casted-up left arm. "I got out of the woods, and then I got attacked by…it was one of those chain Pokemon. The ones that jailed us a while back."

The details were still hard to put together.

Did Meltan eat normal food? Maybe not, but it didn't stop Ollie's from training.

[break][break] "Aww," the Head Ranger said, pouting. "That sucks."

[break][break] The conversation switches to Sootopolis and visible stress shows on the brunette's face.

[break][break] "Yeah, it was flooded. Technically, there's a cease-fire on Sootopolis," he said. "So, if you think about it, it's a win!"

[break][break] Not that people like PENELOPE LIVY would think of it that way. But that was another topic entirely.

[break][break] "Damn. That sucks," he says, hand reaching over to pat the younger boy's head. "And Petalburg was..."

[break][break] His throat tightened. There were many losses. He still had to make his rounds to people like Isaac Merlo and Genevieve Cromwell, but...

[break][break] "DEREK HOFFMAN died."

[break][break] Before he could say more, however -

"It really does. Won't even be able to do any Gym work for a while after I get out of here."

It was the one bit of work he had to do - and he couldn't even do that. He couldn't remember the last time he was this bored; he even had more to do when he was at home.

Hearing about what happened at Sootopolis was…not very encouraging. "...if Rocket still has control of Sootopolis, that's not a win." For him to be happy, Rocket would have to be out of there. "Not after Petalburg."

Though he didn't know the full extent of how badly it'd gone until Ollie told him. There was a flash of horror on Hideo's face, before it mellowed into general frustration, his head falling back into his pillow. "...fuck."

He didn't know Derek well - but he was a fellow Gym Leader.

"Yeah. The big ones with the chains. Jailed a lotta people, including me. Tortured us for a while, put us through hell 'til we broke out. I thought we killed them…but I think I fought them again in Petalburg."

His memory was still coming back to him, but his judgment on the Toxic Chain Pokemon would be pretty clear; he did not like them at all.

"As if we don't have enough shit going on. They're only gonna keep causing problems if we leave them alone."

[break][break] For once, he was glad that Hideo Kino couldn't see it. He understood the others resistance to declaring Sootopolis a win, as he was sure that many other people felt the same way. Especially after the deaths of DEREK HOFFMAN and RAZZ KINGSMAN ... Ollie shook his head. It wasn't helpful to think about.

[break][break] A hand placed gently against the other's scalp, brushing against brown bangs.

[break][break] "We'll get it back." We have to. "Don't worry."

[break][break] Ollie wasn't going to run away again and repeat his past mistakes. This wasn't going to be Kanto.

[break][break] However, at the mention of the CHAINED pokemon from space, the Head Ranger was unable to hide his surprise. For a brief moment, FEAR flickered within glades of evergreen.

[break][break] But he was a Morales. He couldn't fall into despair.

[break][break] "I... that's no good." It was actually horrible. "Have you told anyone else?"

[break][break] His hand slid into his pocket, thumbing over PENELOPE LIVY's number which was on speed dial.

"I hope so." Rocket already held Sootopolis for…2 years? Hideo wouldn't be satisfied with any less than Rocket getting completely ousted from the city - not after Petalburg was taken.

And he wouldn't let Littleroot be added to their collection. He just needed the ability to set things up and the time to coordinate.

Hideo shook his head. All in due time.

But Rocket wasn't the only threat had to worry about.

"Not yet. Haven't really had a chance to." He'd been stuck here, and this was the first time a Leaguer with authority visited him when he could talk - and focus well enough to think back. "I just remember it attacked me and some other people that were there. It was definitely one of them, but if they came back, the others are probably around too."

Which was just what Hoenn needed: immortal monsters causing problems for everyone.

"...first thing I'm gonna do when I get out of here is make sure they won't show up in Littleroot."

Uxie was probably working on that right now - the pixie certainly wasn't in hid hospital room right now.

"Were you there? When everyone got kidnapped and forced to work for those Chain pokemon and the Megalopolans with them."

"I can do it for you. Penny and Freya are gonna wanna hear about this."

[break][break] PENELOPE LIVY and freya morningstar could question him on his own when Hideo Kino was all rest and recovered, when he could at least be healthy enough not to be stuck in the cold, unfriendliness that was the hospital room.

[break][break] He made a mental note to have a meeting scheduled with one of them, but also the question his Rangers who were at Petalburg to see if any of them knew about it.

[break][break] "No," he said, mouth tilted into a frown. "I was here."

[break][break] Him, Gunner Graves and Thomas Benoit, among others, had worked tirelessly to make sure that the League stayed intact while they were missing. But - even back then - he couldn't have fathomed that something like this would actually happen.

[break][break] The vacant expression on PENELOPE LIVY's face when she returned to his apartment — when she returned home to him — wouldn't quite leave him, even months later.

[break][break] Even after they'd come home, part of it still barely felt like a moment worth celebrating.

[break][break] "I'm sorry that you had to go through that."

[break][break] Especially for a kid like him, that must have been traumatic.

Hideo nodded. He would've done so first chance he could - but who knew when his Pokemon would even let him do any work.

For now, he would just lie there. And talk, because there wasn't much else for him to do in this room.

"Guess it's good some people were," he said, "to keep everything running. My Pokemon could run my Gym for me, but they were worried sick when I was gone. Whole swarm of'em were on me when I got back."

It was something good to come back to.

"But while I was there…think I was one of the few that didn't break in some way. And I think that was just 'cause I found out Azelf was there, so I had something to look forward to."

Months and months of searching, just to find it when he was kidnapped. And that was the spark that helped him see his way through that ordeal.

Fate truly had a strange sense of humor.

"Really wish I could forget the shit they put us through in there. But I can remember it all like it happened yesterday."

Not even his Pokemon could help him forget it.

Even the taste of mochi would bring him back.

He couldn't eat mochi anymore.

"...I'm gonna make sure those Pokemon go down. For real this time."

[break][break] There was a lot that Ollie, admittingly, didn't know about Legendary pokemon as much as he should. But the more and more time he spent on Hoenn, he was beginning to realize exactly how much others knew.

[break][break] And how much of the region seemed like an anamoly compared to the others he visited.

[break][break] Even so, he cocked his head towards the younger boy, as to hear him better.

[break][break] Sympathy shimmered behind glades of evergreen as the other spoke more on the torture and trauma that he experienced with the prison. Ollie didn't know what it was like — he couldn't know, having been a person who had always run away from things. But it must have been terrible, if even someone like Eva Morales had trouble weathering it.

[break][break] "Eva felt the same way," he murmured, thinking of how long his sister had been laid up in that bed.

[break][break] A hand closed over the boy's wrist, gently squeezing.

[break][break] "We'll help you. You're not alone either."

Hideo didn't know if Ollie was aware he had Uxie; it was something the higher-ups in the League were aware of by now, but who knew how they disseminated that information.

"Azelf's one of the Lake Trio. Been missing for a while, and I was looking for'em between doing my job as a Gym Leader."

"I had nothing to work with 'til that…kinda messed up, isn't it? Had to go through the worst week of my life, kidnapped and forced to work on some spaceship, just to have the Pokemon I'd spent months looking for show up outta nowhere."

It just made him feel so powerless. Like nothing he did mattered, and he just had to wait until disaster struck.

He didn't want to stop trying, though.

The hand on his wrist worked to alleviate some of his frustration. "...I haven't talked to Eva in a while. Think I might try talking to her when I get a chance."

And, as usual, the assurance that he wasn't alone. "I…I know. I just don't want to have to rely too much on that support. Gotta be able to handle some stuff on my own."

He knew he couldn't do it all on his own - he already relied on his Pokemon for a lot of things - but life was constantly leaving him in places where he had to work things out himself.

Ah.

[break][break] Vaguely, he remembered something that Melody Miro had said at a previous AQUA meeting.

[break][break] Azelf, Uxie and Mespirit... together, they made up the so-called Lake Trio from Sinnoh.

[break][break] "There's the silver lining, I guess?" Ollie forced a chuckle, trying to make light of the situation, even though privately he agreed with Hideo Kino. It was kind of twisted the way that fate sometimes seemed to work out.

[break][break] "Do you know where it is now?"

[break][break] Ollie glanced sympathetically down at the Gym Leader, nodding. He understood where the other was coming from. It was often how he'd felt when he was younger, and it was one of the reasons that had propelled him into Ranger work to begin with. He was tired of sitting behind a desk, doing things that didn't matter; he had wanted to take things into his own hands.

[break][break] "You're strong," he said, ironically confidant despite the situation the other found himself in. But if Melody Miro could vouch for him, then so could ollie morales. "You're a Gym Leader."

[break][break] "But that doesn't mean you can't ask for help when you need it."

[break][break] He smiled, and then when realizing the other couldn't see it, squeezed his wrist reassuringly. Then, he stood up.

[break][break] "I can let Eva know you wanna talk. But don't work yourself too hard, ya hear?"
